Augmented Reality in 2024: How Professions Will Change Everyday Life

La augmented reality (AR) is a technology that in recent years has been applied to the most diverse fields, moving from the realm of games and entertainment to that of professional applications. This transition is radically transforming the way we work, and in this article we will see how.

Difference between augmented reality, augmented virtuality and virtual reality

The now well-known distinction between augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) must be enriched with that of augmented virtuality (AV).

Let's review:

  • La augmented reality overlays digital elements onto the physical environment through devices such as smartphones or headsets, enhancing the perception of the real world with additional information.
  • La virtual reality, instead, completely immerses the user in an artificially created digital environment, isolating him from the real world through VR viewers that cover the entire field of vision.

Finally, the augmented virtuality, less common, integrates real elements into virtual environments, allowing users to interact with physical objects within a virtual space. Real-world objects thus also become elements of a digital scenario. In simulation and industrial design, this technology promises to open up previously unimaginable possibilities.

Augmented Reality Technologies

Among the fundamental hardware components for augmented reality we undoubtedly have the AR viewers, as apple vision pro e goal quest 3

These devices use accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, and cameras that help detect motion, orientation, and spatial features.

From a software point of view, augmented reality uses platforms such as Arkite of Apple and Arcore from Google, which provide tools for developing AR applications.

These software provide APIs for motion tracking, object recognition, surface management and graphics rendering.

Thanks to computer vision and machine learning algorithm To recognize surfaces, objects and environments, the data is processed allowing a fluid and realistic interaction between the real and virtual world.

What benefits can Augmented Reality have in the daily work of companies?

Sure, technological innovations are intriguing, but one wonders what real benefits companies can derive from this type of technology.

One of the main advantages of AR is its ability to improve efficiency and productivity in the workplace.

For example, in manufacturing and maintenance, AR can provide step-by-step instructions overlaid on physical objects, reducing the time needed to complete complex tasks.

For example, maintenance technicians can use AR headsets to display detailed instructions directly on the machines, minimizing errors and speeding up repairs. Like a service, but more punctual and without latencies.

Training and learning

Augmented reality It is also revolutionizing professional training.

Immersive learning environments created by AR allow workers to acquire practical skills more effectively. These are realistic simulations that can prepare employees for difficult or dangerous situations.

Collaboration and communication

The AR facilitates collaboration and communication, especially in remote settings. Through AR tools, teams can share common visions and work together on projects, regardless of their geographic location.

Have you ever thought about the fact that an architect, for example, could collaborate with clients by viewing 3D models of buildings directly on the construction site?

Problems to be solved and open questions of AR

There are still many who believe that AR is a technology relegated to entertainment, without real practical applications in everyday life or in the working world. Instead, as we have already partially seen, the ability to reduce errors, at least in the technical field, is the most concrete and interesting prospect for AR, which in various sector studies reports very interesting results in terms of return on investment. In the healthcare sector, surgeons use AR to view medical images in real time during operations, increasing precision and safety.

Of course, you have to be careful. As with VDTs, AR devices can cause eye strain and disorientation.

This requires special attention to maintaining an ergonomic design. and to observe some limited usage sessions

Studies have shown that, with proper time management and interface optimization, these effects can be minimized, making AR a safe and viable technology for everyday use.

Also Initial costs for the implementation of AR technologies are considered high, discouraging small and medium-sized enterprises from investing in such solutions. However, the widespread adoption and technological development is making this technology increasingly accessible.

Economies of scale and advances in hardware components are driving down costs, allowing even smaller organizations to take advantage of AR without excessive investment.

Finally, the technical complexity Another barrier to developing and integrating AR into existing systems is that many companies fear they don't have the skills to effectively manage this technology.

The perceived technical complexity of integrating AR into existing systems can be overcome through the use of intuitive development platforms such as Apple's ARKit and Google's ARCore.

The good news is that these platforms offer tools and libraries that simplify the development process.

AR is actually perfectly accessible even to those without technical training!

Future of Augmented Reality in Work

As technology evolves, we can expect AR applications to become increasingly sophisticated and integrated into our daily processes.

We will start to view data only in AR. We will interact almost exclusively in AR, instead of in front of a cold flat screen.

The retail sector will become increasingly interactive and endorphin-inducing for the end consumer.

Which sectors will benefit from augmented reality?

We have already mentioned the sector of industrial production and maintenance

Or it is estimated that the professionals of the healthcare sector, such as surgeons and doctors, will use AR to view real-time medical images during surgeries, improving the precision of operations and patient safety. AR will also facilitate the training of new doctors through realistic simulations.

La professional training is another area that will benefit greatly from AR, ol'architecture and construction, retail, the logistics , warehouse management (think about how AR can help see optimized routes for order picking and quick product identification).

In short: augmented reality has the potential to revolutionize numerous sectors, significantly improving efficiency, training and collaboration, and leading to better results in terms of productivity and quality of work.

While there are still challenges to be addressed, the adoption of AR is destined to grow, transforming the way we work and interact with the world.
